Addressing Common Female Urology Problems - Expert PerspectivesWhen it comes to female urology, age matters a lot. Aging, along with inevitable aspects of womanhood like childbirth and hysterectomy, sadly results in a high prevalence of disorders such as urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.

Understanding the Issue

Dr. Jonathan Jay, a board-certified general urologist based in Naples, FL, with a fellowship in female urology avoiding dysfunction and pelvic floor reconstruction, details the problem. “The parts that allow women to hold urine and let their bladders be supported within the pelvis risk damage as they age. Some of the inevitabilities of womanhood predispose to these issues, making them very common.”

Jay continues, “These are not life-threatening problems, but they’re quality-of-life issues, and they’re major ones.” In the sphere of women’s health, female urology problems are unfortunately overlooked, significantly affecting the quality of life, despite not being life-threatening.

Approaching Treatment

With a comprehensive approach to urology problems, the experts at the Advanced Urology Institute go beyond merely defining the problem. They involve their patients in the decision-making process, providing them with ample knowledge about their condition and the available treatment options.

“For instance,” Jay explains, “we first define the problem, educate the patient, and then we talk about the different options that are available. We talk about the positives and negatives of each of those options, and the patient then chooses what they want to do.” This patient-centric approach ensures that each woman has the freedom to make choices about her health that she feels most comfortable with.

Variety of Treatment Options for Common Female Urology Problems

The Institute offers a wide range of treatments, starting with benign procedures that subsequently progress to surgical procedures if the patient prefers that. This flexible approach helps patients find a solution that suits their specific needs and comfort level.

“We offer everything from observation to pessary if you have prolapse, to medications if you have incontinence. We try all the benign things first and then work our way up to surgical procedures if they happen to be bothered enough to want to pursue that,” shares Jay.

Holistic Diagnosis by Experts

Meanwhile, Dr. Yaser Bassel, another erudite from the Advanced Urology Institute, who is stationed in Palm Harbor, FL, explains the importance of differentiating the types of urinary incontinence. He says, “We see a lot of women, for issues with incontinence or involuntary loss of urine. At that point, it’s our job to differentiate the different types of leakage and then come up with a treatment plan for the patient.”

Bassel also sheds light on other common concurrent problems women face, such as pelvic organ prolapse, stating that women often experience a “feeling of heaviness or pain with intercourse, or even sometimes a visible bulge.”

Dr. Jonathan Jay (Naples, FL):
I’m a board-certified general urologist, but I also did a fellowship in female urology avoiding dysfunction and pelvic floor reconstruction. As women age, one of the inevitabilities of aging is that the parts that allow them to hold urine in place and allow their bladders to be supported within the pelvis are at risk of being damaged.

So hysterectomy can damage that support and those mechanisms that allow them to be continent. So can childbirthing, right? So again, some of the inevitabilities of womanhood predispose to some of these problems, which makes it a very common problem. And so one of the reasons I chose to be in Naples, Florida after doing that fellowship is that I knew there would be a lot of those problems to be able to rectify and treat here.

And so we have the ability, again, to define the problem for the patient, to educate them on what they have and what their options are. These are not life-threatening problems, but they’re quality-of-life issues, and they’re major quality-of-life issues. And so the choices that the patients make are not one that I make, but it’s one that they make and they’re comfortable with.

For instance, we first define the problem, educate the patient, and then we talk about the different options that are available, and we talk about the positives and negatives of each of those options, and the patient then chooses what they want to do.

The outcomes are good. Remember, we’re not doing anything that the patient doesn’t want to assume the risk for. We offer everything from observation to pessary, say, if you have prolapse, to medications if you have incontinence. We try all the benign things first, and then we work our way up to surgical procedures if they happen to be bothered enough to want to pursue that.

Dr. Yaser Bassel (Palm Harbor, FL)
We see a lot of women, in particular, for issues with incontinence or involuntary loss of urine, and there are multiple reasons for having that issue. So women can come in complaining of that issue, and at that point, it’s our job to differentiate the different types of leakage and then come up with a treatment plan for the patient.

Beside that, women can also have concomitant issues and issues with things like prolapse or feeling of the pelvic organs coming down through the vaginal opening, typically associated with a feeling of heaviness or pain with intercourse, or even sometimes a visible bulge.
