David Harris, MD: Understanding Benign Prostate HyperplasiaImagine yourself in the shoes of someone struggling with BPH, or benign prostate hyperplasia. As a patient in Southwest Florida, particularly in Fort Myers, FL, this condition might seem like an unavoidable fate. But there’s a beam of hope in the form of Dr. David Harris, a board-certified urologist with Advanced Urology Institute, who helps navigate through the murky waters of this commonplace ailment.

According to Dr. Harris, “Any general urologist sees a lot of BPH and in Southwest Florida particularly with our patient population, we see that all day every day.” A well-experienced veteran, Dr. Harris’ perspective on BPH is informed by years of professional experience.

Emerging Treatments for BPH

In the past, the primary treatment for BPH involved a surgical procedure to open up the channel. As Dr. Harris recalls, “When I was first in training really the only option for treating men with obstruction from BPH was a surgical procedure to open up the channel.” This approach, although effective, often came with side effects and complications, causing irritation and discomfort to patients.

Over time, however, treatments for BPH have evolved. “The next big dynamic shift in management came when medications called alpha blockers came along,” Dr. Harris mentions. These medicines have been favored by men for their non-surgical approach, but they aren’t a permanent solution and can also cause side effects.

The Future of BPH Treatment: UroLift

It’s clear that BPH needs an effective, long-term treatment. That’s where UroLift comes in. As Dr. Harris notes, “It’s very exciting that we have a procedure that I think is a very good intermediary between major surgical intervention to resect or open the prostate and medications.”

UroLift serves as a bridge between the extremes of surgery and medication, providing relief with potentially fewer complications. It’s a new chapter in BPH treatment and a testament to the ongoing evolution of urological treatments.

My name is David Harris and I’m a board-certified urologist with Advanced Urology Institute. Any general urologist sees a lot of BPH and in Southwest Florida particularly with our patient population. We see that all day every day and again I’ve done this for a few years and my perspective may be different than a few of the newer guys when I was first in training really the only option for treating men with obstruction from BPH was a surgical procedure to open up the channel and While that is effective, there can be a lot of irritation, there can be side effects or complications from that.

So over time, there’s been a keen interest in developing alternatives. I think the next big dynamic shift in management came when medications called alpha blockers came along and naturally you can see there was a real tendency to have men who favored trying to avoid surgery and have used medicines. But as we understand more than ever, the medicines are not permanently fixing anything and there are side effects from the medicines.

So we’ve had development of newer techniques and particularly now it’s very exciting that we have a procedure that I think is a very good intermediary between major surgical intervention to resect or open the prostate and medications and that’s a procedure that we’re doing now called UroLift.
